Clips of him with his family, as well as footage from his time as a contestant on The X Factor and with the boyband he found fame with, were played on big screens at London‘s O2 Arena.
One Direction hit Little Things played while footage of Liam recording a version of the song was shown.
The montage also included pictures of Liam holding his son, Bear, and a photograph of him meeting Queen Elizabeth II.
Those watching at home were very moved, with one person commenting: “The liam payne memorial I’m sobbing.”
A second wrote: “@BRITs tribute to Liam Payne was lovely. Brought tears to my eyes, it’s still a shame this happened to him, he should have been there to perform.”
While a third said: “That Liam tribute was actually too much only had to say his name for the tears to start streaming.”
With One Direction, Liam picked up an impressive seven Brit Awards and in 2018 he performed at the ceremony with Rita Ora where they sang their collaboration For You.
The following year he performed his song Live Forever for a BRITs TV special which kicked off the countdown to the main ceremony.
The One Director star, 31, died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on October 16 last year.
Rogelio “Roger” Nores and two staff members at the hotel in Buenos Aires had been charged with manslaughter.
But appeal court judges have now cleared all three and reversed the earlier decision to charge them.
