Private Eye editor Ian Hislop was in standstill London traffic on Tuesday around 10am when bullets are said to have been fired at the back window.
The taxi driver told police they were on Dean Street, near where it meets Oxford Street, when the rear window where Hislop was sat, was shattered.
Both cabbie and Hislop, 64, escaped without injury near to the Private Eye office.
Cops closed the roads around the scene as they combed the area.
Officers are now examining CCTV and keeping an open mind about the motive, a source said.
