Early Life, Family, Parents

Rooney was born in 1991 in Castlebar, County Mayo, where she grew up and now lives, after studying in Dublin and working in New York City. His father, Kieran Rooney, worked for Telecom Éireann and his mother, Marie Farrell, ran an arts center. Rooney has an older brother and a younger sister.

Educational Life

She studied English at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), where she was elected a Scholar in 2011. There she began a master’s degree in politics (she did not complete that) and completed a degree in American Literature, she completed her Masters’s in Literature in 2013.

In April 2019, the New York Public Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers announced its Class of 2019 scholars, which included Rooney. The press release states: “She will write a new novel with the working title Beautiful World, Where Are You, which explores aesthetics and political crisis.”

The novel was published in September 2021 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in the United States and by Faber in the UK and Ireland. Rooney turned down an offer from an Israeli publisher to translate “Beautiful World, Where Are You” into Hebrew, citing his support for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In retaliation, two Israeli bookstore chains announced in early November the removal of all Rooney titles from their shelves. Rooney’s Israeli publisher said it would continue to sell its titles.

Later, 70 writers and editors, including Kevin Barry, Rachel Kushner, Geoff Dyer, Pankaj Mishra, Carmen Callil, and Ahdaf Soueif, in a letter organized by Artists for Palestine UK, cleared that they supported Rooney’s decision.
