The Departure of Cuban Citizens

After competing in the Caribbean Series in the Dominican Republic, Gurriel and his brother Lourdes Jr., who was 22 at the time, fled in February 2016 and moved to Haiti to acquire residency. In June of 2016, Gurriel made the introduction to his future teammate Yordan Alvarez, who is also Cuban. The meeting took place in Haiti.  Gurriel became available for free agency in June, when Major League Baseball announced that he may be signed by any major league club as a player.

Before nearly ten years had passed, ESPN.com had incorrectly reported that Gurriel and Eduardo Paret, another player on the Cuban national team, had fled the country of Cuba and settled in Colombia.

On August 1, 2006, Gurriel responded to this allegation by declaring that he had promptly returned to his house in Cuba after the conclusion of the tournament in which the Cuban national team had been competing.
