A 20-year-old man from the NSW regional town of Gunnedah has been charged with the murder of a baby.

The charges relate to the death of a four-month-old baby in January in nearby Tamworth.

The newborn was taken to Gunnedah Hospital on January 20 before being transferred to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he died the following day.

Following a joint investigation into circumstances surrounding the child’s death between detectives from Oxley Police District and State Crime Command’s homicide squad and child abuse squad, a 20-year-old man was arrested in Tamworth at about 8.45am yesterday.

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with murder (domestic violence).

The man, from Gunnedah, was refused bail overnight and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court later today.
