A man has been charged after he allegedly drove an alleged fugitive from NSW to the Northern Territory in a camper van last month.

The 46-year-old was arrested in Nhulunby, a small town in north-east Arnhem land, on February 2.

The Australian Federal Police will allege in court that the man drove to Sydney to collect a man who allegedly escaped from a rehab facility in Swan Bay, north of Newcastle.

It will be alleged in court that the pair then drove about 4600km in a camper van to Queensland and then to the Northern Territory via the Central Arnhem Road.

He was arrested on board a boat sailing north from Nhulunby in the Arafura Sea.

The AFP will allege was part of a drug-importing syndicate.

The Irish national was arrested almost a week later on February 2 in Nhulunby.

He was charged with one count of providing support for people smuggling.

He was expected to appear in Darwin Local Court Today.
