The fire, which tore through the upper level of the building on Tuesday morning, was so intense it caused parts of the roof to collapse.

Emergency services were called to building on Worendo St in Southport at 5.49am.

As the blaze consumed the three-storey building, the man managed to climb down to safety by escaping over the balcony.

Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene, and a man in his 40s was treated for minor burns to his arm.

All other residents of the building have been accounted for, a fire service spokesperson confirmed.

Six fire crews remain onsite, working to extinguish the blaze.
