Members of the public performed CPR on the young man in the middle of Enmore Street in Newtown in Sydney’s inner-west after the attack at 11pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics arrived at the scene in four minutes and treated the man for serious head injuries before he was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

He remained in a serious but stable condition on Thursday morning.

NSW Police revealed two off-duty officers had been injured in the attack.

‘Police have been told the injured man and a second man, both off-duty NSW Police Force officers, were walking along Enmore Road when they approached three unknown men who were having an argument with each other,’ it said.

‘The two off-duty officers were assaulted with one of them knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked to the head.

‘The three men ran from the scene prior to police arrival.’
