Student Shooter ID’d in High School Shooting That Left Girl Dead

Tennessee police have identified the student who carried out Wednesday’s shooting that killed a girl and left another classmate injured.

Metro Nashville police said the victim has been identified as Josselin Escalante, 16, while the shooter is Solomon Henderson, 17. WSMV reported that Henderson shot Escalante and another student in Antioch High School’s cafeteria before killing himself.

A photo circulating on social media appears to show Henderson holding a small handgun. Another depicts the same gun peeking out of a backpack. Law enforcement has not commented on the photos’ veracity.

Police said Henderson was seen confronting a 16-year-old student in the cafeteria when he opened fire, striking Escalante. It is unclear whether Escalante was involved in the initial altercation.

A 17-year-old who was grazed by a bullet during Wednesday’s incident has been released from the hospital, according to reports.

A motive is unclear.

“As to a motive, we’re looking into that,” police Chief John Drake said, per The Tennessean. “There are some materials on the internet that we’re looking at that’s under the investigation.”

Metro Nashville Public Schools said the high school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
