Two cyclists have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after they were struck by a car in Melbourne.

Police were told the duo was riding southbound on the Nepean Highway at Carrum between McLeod and Eel Race roads when the vehicle hit them from behind at 6.30am.

The car, believed to be a grey Mazda 3 sedan, was last seen driving south on the highway past the United Petroleum service station.

The cyclists, a 52-year-old man from Ormond and a 48-year-old man from Glen Waverley, were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe the car will have damage to the front bumper bar and bonnet.

“Both cyclists were pushed up onto the bonnet and the bikes were significantly damaged,” Victoria Police said.

Police have appealed for the driver of the car to come forward.
