Mets’ potential Pete Alonso divorce would have major Brett Baty ramifications

With the Mets and Pete Alonso still far apart monetarily and a parting looking likely now, the Mets may well stay internal for the starting infield spot. Which means Brett Baty has an excellent chance to get his third chance at third base, especially with Ronnie Mauricio coming off an injury year.

Baty turned himself into a decent third baseman and has big, if sporadic, power. But the big question remains: Is New York the right spot for him?

One rival exec sees Baty as a “change-of-scenery guy.”

As aggressive as the Mets were in winning Juan Soto, it seems they took a decidedly more blasé approach with longtime star Alonso. Even after Alonso showed a willingness to consider a three-year deal (with opt-outs), the Mets didn’t show much interest in meeting the salary requests of the player who’s hit the most homers in the NL since entering the league in 2019.
