A massive fire has shut a major freeway in Melbourne.

The blaze, which is understood to be at Kennards Self Storage in Port Melbourne, has shut the adjoining Westgate Freeway in both directions.

Footage shared on social media shows out-of-control flames tearing through the storage facility, as nearby trees are engulfed and a huge plume of black smoke hangs over the city.

The VicEmergency website reveals that at least nine crews are heading to the blaze and that it is ‘not yet under control’.

Reports on social media have suggested a grass fire spread to the self-storage warehouse.

Daily Mail Australia has approached Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria for comment.

More to come.
