A pilot in his 60s has died after a light plane crash in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

The plane came down at 11.20am on Palmers Island about 8km west of Yamba, close to the border with Queensland.

The pilot died at the scene, while a man in his 30s who was a passenger was rushed to Gold Coast Hospital with serious injuries, NSW Police said.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District are investigating.

An investigation into the crash is under way.
