1-year-old baby dies from ‘massive impact’ after man repeatedly slammed her to the floor when she kept crying louder: Police

An Ohio man allegedly admitted to shaking and slamming a 1-year-old baby’s head on the floor when she wouldn’t stop crying — leading to the baby’s death weeks later.

Michael Mayor, 34, was arrested on Dec. 11 following a Dec. 5 incident that left a baby girl with a skull fracture, injuries he allegedly admitted to police that he caused. He was initially indicted on six felony charges including felonious assault and endangering a child. On Dec. 20, according to court documents obtained by Dayton CBS affiliate WHIO, the baby died “as a result of the injuries inflicted upon her by” by Mayor.

The alleged assault on the baby happened at 3:12 p.m. on Dec. 5, when Mayor’s wife, who provides babysitting services in the Dayton area, was reportedly watching the little girl. The babysitter, thinking the baby was napping, reportedly noticed that she was breathing but unresponsive. According to Piqua police reports, she told dispatchers that the toddler was “pale, had bruises on her head, and she was unsure of where they came from.”

The girl was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with a fracture on the back of her skull, a subdural hematoma, and additional “complex” injuries that were caused by a “massive impact.”

While the babysitter was taking other children to school on the morning of Dec. 5, she allegedly left the toddler in the care of Mayor. When she returned, he had apparently said he put the little girl down for a nap on the bedroom floor, police reportedly said. But by 3 p.m., and after checking on her multiple times, the babysitter noticed that the toddler had not woken up. At that point, she called 911.

Because he had been alone with the toddler, police started looking at Mayor and determined, along with prosecutors, that he should be charged with assaulting the girl.

According to the police report, Mayor allegedly told police that “he ‘shook’ her, and when she cried louder, he began to ‘slam’ her on the floor of the bedroom. He stated this was not done on the blankets and he did this several times until she stopped crying.”

After his alleged assault, Mayor reportedly stated that he thought the girl had fallen asleep and left her on the floor.

Mayor was taken into custody on Dec. 11 and is being held on $1 million bond. Additional charges against him have not been filed since the documents filed on Dec. 20 that noted the baby’s death. According to court records, Mayor’s next court date is a bond modification hearing on Jan. 2.
