Residents in the Adelaide suburb of Plympton have evacuated their homes after waking to the sound of explosions in the middle of the night.

Outside, they saw smoke and flames coming from a backyard shed, and a man running off.

The incident, which occurred just before midnight last night, has left the community shaken, and authorities are treating the blaze as suspicious.

As the inferno raged, firefighters battled to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring homes on James Street.

“It would’ve been 20 or 30 feet in the air, the trees were sort of on fire,” neighbour Paul Wooley said.

Police were back at the scene this morning to try and determine who may have been responsible.

Moments after hearing an explosion, neighbours say they saw a man running down nearby Durant Street before jumping into a car and taking off.

“(I) saw a guy running around the corner as fast as he could,” Wooley said.

The estimated cost of the damage is $45,000.
