Thief returns stolen baby Jesus statue with note asking forgiveness for ‘dumb mistake’

He’s Dismas at Christmas.

A penitent thief returned a ceramic baby Jesus to a Colorado fire station with a chicken-scratch note that asked for forgiveness for the “dumb mistake.”

The Fort Collins, Co., Old Town Square nativity scene had been missing the iconic baby Jesus since Dec. 17th — but it was returned by an anonymous thief just in time for the religious holiday, according to Fox9.

Fort Collins Police initially put out a photo of a blonde-haired charlatan allegedly caught in the act of pilfering the ceramic depiction of the savior from the traditional holiday decoration set piece from the small town square.

Days later the statue was returned to the Poudre Fire Authority with a scrawled note.

“I’m really sorry, I made a dumb mistake in the moment. It won’t happen again,” the half-hearted apology letter reads.

Some fingers of the statue appear to be broken off.

Authorities are not sure if the damage was sustained while being trafficked, according to the report.

Police said no further information about the thief is known, according to Fox9.
