9News can reveal Qantas is considering an Adelaide to Singapore route when it finally returns an overseas service to South Australia.

The development comes as major carrier China Southern Airlines resumed direct flights from Guangzhou to Adelaide today.

In 2019, South Australia welcomed 66,000 Chinese tourists, and the reinstated Guangzhou-Adelaide route, which was suspended in March 2020 during the outbreak of COVID-19, is expected to provide a boost to tourism and trade.

South Australian exports to China have reached a record $4.43 billion, and the resumption of China Southern flights unlocks an extra 45 tonnes of cargo space each week.

The airline will operate a return flight three times per week until March next year, and there are hopes of it returning year-round once demand increases.

It’s expected Qantas will also soon restart an international service to Adelaide after an 11-year hiatus.

I’m very confident with Qantas it’s not if it’s when,” Adelaide Airport chief executive Brenton Cox said.
