Two teenagers have been charged after a home was allegedly broken into yesterday about 2.30pm on Bokhara Street in Larapinta, west of Alice Springs.
Police responded to reports two men had invaded the home with one woman and four children, including a baby, inside.
The adult woman was holding her two-month-old baby when one of the men allegedly assaulted her with a blunt weapon.
Her handbag and car keys were allegedly stolen before the teenagers fled the scene on foot.
The woman and her baby – who sustained a serious head injury –were taken to Alice Springs Hospital.
The baby was then flown to Adelaide for more treatment.
The baby is in a stable condition today at The Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide.
Detective Superintendent Regional Crime Paul Lawson described the incident as “absolutely shocking”.
“I am in shock, the community is in shock, first responders are in shock… this has got to stop,” he said.
“Our thoughts go out to the victims of this incident. Their families… I cannot even think about what they are going through.”
The offenders, aged 16 and 17, were both apprehended within an hour and half of the alleged home invasion.
They have both been charged with five offences including unlawfully causing serious harm, aggravated assault and robbery, theft and aggravated burglary.
Both will appear in court in the NT today.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
