Guardians trading Andrés Giménez to Blue Jays in surprising swap

Andrés Giménez is heading north of the border.

The second baseman is getting traded from the Guardians to the Blue Jays in a Tuesday swap, according to multiple reports.

The full deal includes Giménez and reliever Nick Sandlin going to the Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Spencer Horwitz and minor league outfielder Nick Mitchell, Sportsnet reported.

Giménez, a former Met, is a three-time Gold Glove winner and has been in Cleveland for the past four seasons.

He arrived in Cleveland as part of the blockbuster Francisco Lindor trade with the Mets in 2021 and had a breakout year in 2022, hitting .297 with 17 homers and 69 RBIs to become an AL All-Star before seeing his offensive production drop off over the next two seasons.

The second basemen hit .252 last while clobbering nine home runs and recording 63 RBIs last season for the Guardians en route to their trip to the ALCS.

The 26-year-old second baseman previously signed a seven-year, $106.5 million contract with the Guardians in the spring of 2023 that includes a club option for 2030.

He is scheduled to make $10 million next year, $15 million in 2026 and over $23 million each of the successive three seasons.

The other piece of the deal going to Canada, Sandlin, had a 3.75 ERA last season in 68 appearances for the Guardians.

They’ll be heading to a Toronto team that had a down year, finishing 2024 with a 74-88 record.

The Blue Jays have been trying to tinker with their lineup after this latest ugly season, and ESPN reported that the club is willing to do all that it can to be competitive in the AL East next season.

Horwitz, who plays first and second base, had a .790 OPS with 12 homers in 97 games for the Blue Jays last season.

The left-handed hitter has been particularly strong against righties with a .283/.376/.476 slash line against them.
