A woman has been charged after police allege she set fire to her own bakery in Western Australia to claim insurance.

The fire erupted at a bakery in Spender Park, Albany, on Saturday, October 12, at about 2.10pm.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze but there was significant structural, roofing, and smoke damage to the premises.

The damage cost was estimated at $955,000.

Detectives will allege the 50-year-old woman intentionally set the fire, and that she lodged an insurance claim relating to it a few days later.

Her policy stated she was entitled to $500,000 for contents insurance, and a further $2.2 million to compensate for lost business.

The woman will appear in court on December 12.
