Two people who died in a shooting, believed to have been a burglary gone wrong, on Victoria’s Melbourne Peninsula have been identified as Jack Gilmour, 29, and Charlyz Hayter, 19.

9News understands that Gilmour was inside a home on Parson Street in Rye when a man and woman allegedly broke in, demanding cash and keys about 4am yesterday.

It is understood Gilmour fired a shotgun at one of the alleged intruders, 19-year-old Charlyz Hayter.

Hayter died at the scene.

Several shots were allegedly then fired at Gilmour by the unknown man, killing the 29-year-old.

Police said the man then fled the scene.

Gilmour’s mother was at the scene of the shooting yesterday, tearfully hugging one of her son’s dogs.

Charlyz was known to be a talented gymnast. 

Police are still searching for the second man – the gunman who shot Gilmour.

No arrests have been made.
