A police officer and 'person of interest' were injured in a 'serious incident' in Launceston on Tuesday

A Tasmanian police officer and an armed ‘person of interest’ have been injured amid reports of an armed man threatening people in central Launceston.

The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries while the ‘person of interest’ suffered critical injuries in a clash on St John Street on Tuesday morning. 

The main police station is adjacent to the scene of the incident, and officers attended shortly after 10am when they received reports of an armed man threatening members of the public.

The injured officer was taken to Launceston General Hospital. No other people were hurt and there was no ongoing threat. 

A crime scene has been established with the surrounding area – St John Street between William Street and Cimitiere Street, and Cimitiere Street between Charles Street and St John Street – closed to the public.

Police are expected to hold a press conference at 2.30pm.
