Opposition Senate Leader Simon Birmingham will retire at the next federal election in 2025

Senior Liberal senator and former minister Simon Birmingham is set to retire from politics after 17 years as a senator for South Australia.

Peter Dutton confirmed the announcement on Thursday afternoon, and thanked Senator Birmingham for his dedication to the party.

‘Can I say thank you very much to Simon Birmingham, who has just announced his retirement as our leader the opposition in the Senate,’ the Opposition Leader said.

‘Again, Birmo has a young family, spending more time with them.

‘He’s given an enormous amount to our country.’

The Opposition Senate Leader and shadow foreign minister, who previously served as minister for education, trade, and finance under Coalition governments, will retire at the next federal election in 2025. 

Mr Birmingham has been a Senator for South Australia since 2007.
