Fishermen have been given a fright by a great white shark that surfaced metres from a jetty in Adelaide, thrashing in the water as it tore crab nets near unsuspecting swimmers.

The shark quickly took two nets at Semaphore jetty as crowds of people watched on.

Eyewitnesses said there were swimmers in the water nearby, with people rushing to get them to dry land.

It’s the second shark sighting in as many days off Semaphore, after another great white was spotted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter approximately 50 metres offshore on Saturday.

The helicopter crew successfully herded that shark back into deeper waters.

Surf Life Saving SA says it’s not usual to see sharks along the coast at this time of the year, but since mid-October there have been 36 sightings.
