Erik Spoelstra’s game-blowing flub exposed this hard coaching truth

Every time you look at the replay, you expect the video to somehow correct itself. That’s how crazy it was. That’s how inexplicable it was, and is. There’s Detroit’s Cade Cunningham finding Jalen Duren for a slam dunk with less than a second and a half remaining in OT in the Pistons’ NBA Cup opener with the Heat Tuesday night.

It was a brilliantly executed emergency play, the Pistons trailing by two. You can immediately see how unhappy Miami coach Erik Spoelstra is because that’s the kind of play a coach rewinds over and over in his mind, and even more often on his tablet later on.

You can also see in the corner of the screen that Miami has no time-outs left.

And yet in his anger, Spoelstra calls a timeout.
