Anthony Albanese was speaking to the media in Sorell, north-east Tasmania, today to unveil Labor MP Rebecca White as a candidate for the seat of Lyons when he was interrupted by shouting.

Protesters shouted ‘Shame Albanese’ while the PM spoke before Agriculture Minister Julie Collins began her address.

The chanting resumed when Albanese returned to the microphone, but the PM did not respond to the protesters.

The three protesters were present at the event to call on the Albanese government to save the Maugean skate, an endangered fish native to Tasmania, it is believed.

As they got closer to the lectern, more chants could be heard.

“Keep your promise! No new extinctions!” they chanted.

The government announced today it would invest $28 million to improve water quality in Tasmania, which would help save the Maugean skate.

“The Tasmanian salmon industry is the backbone of many regional communities and it’s essential we support the thousands of jobs it creates right across the state,” Albanese said.

The skate is a prehistoric fish that is only native to Tasmania’s Macquarie Harbour.
