A crew member who fell off a cargo ship has been found alive on the NSW coast overnight.

The man fell from bulk carrier vessel at 11.30pm on Thursday night off the Newcastle coast, 169km north of Sydney.

He was spotted nearly 24 hours later on Blacksmiths Beach in Swansea last night, after reportedly swimming for more than eight kilometres.

A multi-agency team began a search for the man, including NSW Police and Marine Rescue NSW.

“Two Marine Rescue NSW vessels have been tasked by NSW Police Marine Area Command this afternoon to search for a crew member missing from a large commercial vessel off Newcastle,” Marine Rescue NSW said yesterday.

He’s been taken to hospital for treatment.
