A grassfire has broken out at Sydney Airport after reports of an explosion with an aircraft’s right engine upon takeoff.

It’s understood Qantas flight QF520 had taken off from Sydney just before 1pm today.

Passenger Georgina Lewis said a loud bang could be heard upon takeoff.

“One of the engines appeared to have gone,” Lewis told 9News.

“The pilot came on 10 minutes later to explain that they had a problem with a right-hand engine on take-off.”

The Boeing 737 was headed to Brisbane with 174 passengers onboard.

Fire Rescue NSW are on the scene assisting Air Services Australia.

“We’ve got a number of fire trucks on scene working to contain or extinguish a grass fire, a pretty large grass fire adjacent to the third runway,” FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry.

“Fortunately due to the layout it is contained, it’s not going to go anywhere.

“But we do need to get this fire out so the airport can resume its operations again.”
