The search for a young boy who was swept out to sea at a popular beach will resume on Monday morning after it was suspended due to poor light.

Emergency services raced to The Entrance on NSW Central Coast at about 5.15pm on Sunday following reports an 11-year-old boy was spotted struggling in rough conditions and never returned to shore.

An urgent land, air and sea search and rescue operation was launched by officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District, Marine Area Command and Surf Life Saving.

Multiple emergency services vehicles lined Marine Parade as the major search operation got underway.

Two rescue helicopters also searched extensively for the missing boy as distressed loved ones watched on until the search was eventually suspended for the night.
