A woman has sparked fury among Gold Coast locals after she stood in a public car park at Burleigh Head (pictured) to reserve it for a friend

A woman has infuriated motorists by reserving a prime parking spot at a popular beach by standing in the empty space.

The woman was filmed standing in the empty parking bay at Burleigh Hill, on the Gold Coast, while waiting for a friend to arrive.

A silver SUV attempted to enter the park, but was waved on by the woman shortly before she stepped aside for her friend in a Hyundai i30 to take the space.

Footage of the incident was shared to Facebook where commenters slammed the ploy in an area where it was difficult to find a parking space.

‘There’s no way I wouldn’t have driven in, in fact, if I saw that I would have taken that park, even if I didn’t need it,’ one wrote.

‘No one has exclusive rights to a public car park or should get away with that.’

Other social media users said they would have pressured the pedestrian to leave the space and take the park if in the same situation.

‘I would just drive in, she will move eventually, I am patient,’ one wrote.

‘I have a dashcam, so would make for some good viewing.’

‘The person will move when you drive towards them,’ a third added.

Some however said that it was not necessarily true.

‘They don’t move, I was half in park and guy stood in front on me wouldn’t move even with the threat of hitting him,’ one wrote.

‘UnAustralian to do what this blow-in is doing,’ another said.

While there are no specific road laws prohibiting the act, pedestrians are not allowed to create a traffic hazard by obstructing the path of a driver.

Anyone who breaks that law risks a $154 fine.
