A shocking neglect case out of Indianapolis, Indiana, has a 75-year-old mother facing felony charges, this after she was accused of leaving her adult daughter on the floor, between a bed and a wall at home, for a whole week, allegedly because she wanted the paralyzed victim to “get up on her own.”
Records show that Rose Chavis was booked into jail in Marion County on Thursday on two charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury to her 40-year-old daughter. A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said that the victim, “diagnosed with Cerebral palsy, paralysis on the left side” and having “other physical/mental impairments” that make her an “endangered adult” under the law, fell out of bed in September and was not helped for a whole week, even though her mother and caregiver was allegedly “aware” of the fall.
Court documents began by noting the investigation began on Sept. 13, after authorities received a call about the alleged neglect at a residence on Lancashire Court, where the suspect and victim lived together. Three days later, the victim was still hospitalized with an infection that “would most likely require” her to be sent to a “rehabilitation facility,” documents said.
According to police, the defendant allegedly stated that her daughter had been “getting sicker and sicker” but that she had warned the victim “not to call the ambulance because of calling them too many times in the past.” Chavis allegedly added that she wanted the victim to “get up on her own.”
While the victim was on the floor, the defendant allegedly gave her food and drink but did not call 911. Instead, the victim managed to call 911 on her own after using a coat hanger to reach the device, cops said.
“Patients states she fell out of bed 7 days ago and was stuck between her bed and the wall since that time. She reports that her mother was afraid to touch her or call EMS but was providing her with some food/fluids as well as her medications,” the affidavit said. “She was able to reach her cell phone with a coat hanger and call 911.”
When the victim was at the hospital, documents said, medical professionals observed “extreme skin sloughing with multiple wounds on the patient’s backside from her knee creases up to her mid back” and the presence of maggots “in some of her wounds.”
“The patient reported pain of 7/10 from her legs,” the affidavit said.
Local NBC affiliate WTHR’s report on the case included video of the moment that Chavis was placed into handcuffs by officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Court records reviewed by Law&Crime show that Chavis is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7, this coming Monday, and that she has been ordered not to contact the victim. As of Friday, the docket did not show a defense attorney of record.
