Two men have been shot by police in Sydney’s west after they allegedly broke into a Labor MP’s home and stole her husband’s car.

Karen McKeown, the state member for Penrith, called police after midday on Friday when she realised her home had been broken into and her husband Brendan’s car was missing.

Police allegedly found the men inside the vehicle in an underground carpark of a unit block on Lane Street in Wentworthville.

The men allegedly drove the stolen car drove towards officers, before police opened fire.

‘Police discharged their firearms, injuring two men inside the stolen car,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

‘The officers immediately rendered first aid until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.’

They were taken to Westmead Hospital. One was reportedly shot in the head and remains in a critical condition, while the other was shot in the leg and is in a serious but stable condition.

The police officers were not physically injured.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad is now investigating.

Ms McKeown told the Saturday Telegraph: ‘Last night my home was broken into and my husband’s car stolen. 

‘I reported this to police.’

‘While I am shaken from the events, thankfully I am unharmed.’

She thanked police for their ‘bravery’ and for responding to the alleged incident promptly.

Lane Street was blocked off on Friday afternoon while police officers patrol the area.

Residents of the unit block have been told to stay inside while the crime scene is underway. 

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb will front the media later on Friday afternoon.
