Guardsman Missing Since Last Year Murdered by Wife as He Slept, Cops Say

A Utah woman was arrested on Wednesday for killing her husband who vanished in September and remains unaccounted for.

Jennifer Gledhill, 41, allegedly told a confident informant that she killed her husband, Matthew Johnson, 51, and buried his body in a shallow grave. KSL reported that Cottonwood Hill police found evidence suggesting Gledhill fatally shot Johnson in the head as he slept in the master bedroom.

Johnson, a member of the U.S. military Special Operations Unit, was reported missing on September 20, 2023. Ten days later, his truck was discovered a few blocks from his home, according to KSL.

Witnesses allegedly told police that Johnson and Gledhill were seen arguing on September 20. Gledhill filed for divorce in July, and he filed for a protective order in mid-August. A judge dismissed that order less than a week before the fatal shooting. Gledhill and Johnson lived together despite the pending divorce.

Detectives said “significant cleanup” was done after the slaying, including carpet cleaning and wall bleaching. Gledhill told the informant that she removed multiple items from the home and destroyed them to conceal evidence of the slaying, according to Gephardt Daily.

“During this search, we discovered a large blood-stained spot in the master bedroom carpet underneath the bed,” the affidavit detailed. “Blood was also found one the bed frame slats, which supports the information police were told.”

Phone records reportedly indicated that a new mattress was purchased on September 24. Citing electronic data, investigators believe Johnson’s remains are located in the same spot described as the confidential informant.

According to KSTU, Gledhill also told the informant that she would shoot herself before she was arrested.

Gledhill is facing charges of murder and obstruction of justice. She remains jailed without bond.
