Tanking is the Nets’ quickest path to the future, if they can navigate past their competition to the bottom

With NBA training camps opening this week, the top third of the league is aiming for a title while the bottom third is tanking for the lottery. The rebuilding Nets are clearly the latter.

But now Jordi Fernandez — a rookie head coach at that — is being forced into the dichotomy of building a winning culture while losing. That unenviable task begins Tuesday when Brooklyn tips off training camp.

“One thing we want to do is create winning habits,” Fernandez said.

“It starts with us having transparent conversations, because things have certainly changed over the course of the summer and things will continue to evolve,” added Nets GM Sean Marks. “So, as long as we’re on the same page and using the same language and that’s spread throughout the organization and to our players, that’s paramount. That has to be clear that we’re going in the direction we’re going in.
