South Australia’s police horses have a new home at Gepps Cross.

The new stables, which cost $90 million, are an upgrade from the previous location at Thebarton Barracks, where the horses had been housed for over a century.

“I’d say it’s like going from a straw hut to the Intercontinental,” Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said.

The purpose-built complex features an indoor arena, individual stalls, and spacious paddocks.

The relocation was forced by the pending construction of the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and while the search for a new base was complicated, the Commissioner says it’s landed in the right place.

“I think everyone who will be working here and who’s been involved in this process are very happy with what we have delivered,” Stevens said.

The ventilated stables are equipped to house 32 horses but there is space at this new facility to expand the mounted unit in the future.

The neighbouring canine unit and staff offices are expected to be completed early next year.
