Thanks, I Hate It

Janelle says she might need to ‘lawyer up’ if she wants to fully disentangle herself from the troubled Coyote Pass property.

Janelle Brown is ready to move on. But her ex-husband is making it difficult. In a scene from the Sept. 22 episode of Sister Wives, Janelle opens up about how Kody Brown is making it virtually impossible for her to deal with her share of the troubled Coyote Pass property.

Janelle thinks she needs to ‘lawyer up’ to sell Coyote Pass

In a clip from the upcoming Sister Wives episode shared with Us Weekly, Janelle opens up for to her former sister wife Christine Brown about her frustration over Coyote Pass.

Years ago, the Browns bought the large parcel of land in Arizona with the idea that Kody and his four wives would have separate homes on the property. That dream never materialized, and three of Kody’s marriages eventually fell apart. Now, Janelle is trying to disentangle herself from the complicated real estate situation.

“If Kody’s not willing to buy me out, I’m going to have to do something with it,” she says. “But we’ve got to pay it off. And he’s not talking to me about it. So, I think I’m going to have to lawyer up. Because I think that’s the only way I’m going to get any kind of decision out of him.”

“I don’t know what else to do,” she adds.

Janelle’s situation with Coyote Pass is complicated because she was never legally married to Kody, with whom she had six children. As a result, she “has no legal claim to Kody’s property,” she admits.

“It’s really complicated because there is no legal marriage,” Janelle explains in an interview.

Another wrinkle? Kody is doing an excellent job avoiding Janelle. They mostly communicate via text and haven’t had an in-person conversation about their relationship status. (Kody and Janelle announced in December 2022 that they were separating after 30 years together.)

As Janelle explains in the episode, Christine has already given up her share of Coyote Pass. But both Janelle and Kody’s other ex-wife Meri Brown still own part of the property.

“She and I both are like, ‘This represents the only asset we would be taking from the marriage,’” she says in another clip from the episode (via People).

Janelle thinks Kody is being ‘insane’

Now, a note on one of the property’s parcels is about to come due. If Kody doesn’t pay it, he could lose all of Coyote Pass. But he’s been shutting Janelle out, leaving her unsure of what’s going to happen to one of her most significant financial assets.

“I mean, that’s how it’s written,” she says in a confessional. “The rest of our property is collateral for the note. It’s insane to me that Kody is not taking this more seriously.”

Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC. Episodes also stream on Max.
