A man has been arrested after leading Gold Coast police on a 2.5-kilometre pursuit down a waterway.

The man was seen swimming away from Southport just after 6.30am, with river police in tow.

Parts of the Sundale Bridge were closed during the pursuit, causing some traffic delays.

The man led police along the Nerang River towards Bundall.

After being followed for two hours, the man got out of the water at a riverbank in Bundall.

He attempted to escape after leaving the water but police waiting on the bank tackled and arrested him.

He was taken into police custody.
