This Childhood Cancer Awareness month, a Gold Coast family is sharing their story, documenting the ups and downs of treatment and proving that a little positivity and a crafty side project go a long way.

Five-and-a-half-year-old Obi was diagnosed with leukemia after months of persistent illnesses.

“Obi was in kindy at the time and we just thought it was virus after virus and soon we realised we had to take her to the doctor because she is not getting better,” mum Katie Stargazer said.

The diagnosis was the beginning of a medical roller coaster, but from tragedy something beautiful grew as Obi and Katie embarked on a unique project by recording the highs and lows of treatment as part of a school science project.

“It’s kind of left a bit of a legacy behind which has been incredible,” Katie said.

Obi’s treatment regimen involves chemotherapy, lumbar punctures, oral medication, and steroids. After five months, she still has two more years to go but remains resilient, supported by her family.

“I look forward to the day I can… put my own name there and ring the bell to say ‘goodbye leukemia’,” she said.
