Jets report card: Robert Saleh’s team looked like it didn’t belong with 49ers

Grading the Jets’ 32-19 Week 1 loss to the 49ers on Monday:

Offense

The Jets had Aaron Rodgers back under center but they still looked lost for most of the night.

Rodgers (13-of-21, 167 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 82.8 rating) had flashes of his old self but there were long stretches when he could not move the ball.

The Jets only had 49 plays as they failed to sustain drives.

RB Breece Hall (16 rushes, 54 yards, 1 TD, 5 receptions, 39 yards) had a hard time finding running space behind the revamped offensive line and had a critical fumble early in the game.

Defense

When the news came down that Christian McCaffrey was inactive, the initial reaction was it could be a big night for the Jets defense.

Instead, backup Jordan Mason ran for 147 yards on 28 carries and scored one touchdown.

The Jets allowed 401 yards to the 49ers and could not get off the field on third down. The 49ers scored on eight straight possessions. The pass rush was non-existent.

GRADE: F

Special Teams

This was another game where Thomas Morstead may have been the best player on the Jets. Morstead boomed a 60-yard punt that flipped the field at one point.

The Jets did not get much out of the new kickoff return.

Xavier Gipson’s longest return was 28 yards.

Coaching

The Jets looked like a clearly inferior team Monday night.

The 49ers are a good team, but the Jets are supposed to be as well. Instead, it looked like the JV playing the varsity.

Robert Saleh needs to find answers and get things buttoned up.

Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett did not inspire confidence, even with Rodgers.

The Jets were outcoached by Kyle Shanahan.
