Some lucky Perth residents may have noticed the work of the city’s “cash phantom”, Jake Versailles, who has been hiding hundreds of dollars in secret locations for people to find.

The giveaways, planted by the FIFO worker, have been driven by a desire to help those who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

“I wanted to help people going through tough times,” Versailles said.

“Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.”

Using his unique brand of philanthropy, Versailles’ giveaway has taken the form of a “local lottery”, with cash prizes hidden across Perth’s suburbs.

Clues to the hidden money’s location are posted on social media, attracting followers to his page who are eager to claim the prize.

In a recent giveaway witnessed by 9News, Versailles posted the final hint, leading one lucky 12-year-old, “JJ”, to discover $500 hidden under a park bench in just six minutes.

But Versailles’ generosity has extended beyond just this one-off giveaway.

Since May, he’s anonymously given away more than $1000 of his own money through his organisation, Making Lives Better Australia, which he now hopes to turn into a full-time gig.

As for where the modern-day philanthropist plans to take his project next?

“The dream we have is to one day give away houses, cars, that’s the dream that we’re striving for,” he said.
