Police in Louisiana are searching for a mother whose 4-year-old child reported escaped from their apartment last week and was hit by a car.

The boy suffered a skull fracture, a broken femur, and several lacerations to his head and body, an warrant says, according to WAFB. Baton Rouge Police said they spoke with the mother, 28-year-old Shannon Moore, while the child was hospitalized but don’t know where she is now.

Moore reportedly told police that the boy opened a sliding door and ran out of the apartment on August 30. She gave “chase” but couldn’t catch him and waited 30 minutes before calling police for assistance.

Officers responded to that call but were unable to find the boy. Minutes later, a driver flagged down an officer, saying she hit a small boy who ran in front of her vehicle.

The child was conscious and stable when he was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Officers also said the boy’s diaper was overflowing.

Investigators also learned that officers had responded to a similar call from the mother the day before. Moore reportedly told police at that time that the boy had escaped several times because of a broken lock.

The Department of Children and Family Services has been asked to investigate further.

Moore is wanted for one count each of child desertion and improper supervision of a minor.
