A man has been arrested over an alleged hit-and-run in the regional Queensland town of Kingaroy this morning that left a man dead.

The alleged victim – a 36-year-old local man – was out for an early morning walk with another man at around 5am when he was hit by a black Mercedes on First Avenue, police allege.

The car allegedly left the scene before emergency services arrived.

Emergency services rushed to the street, but the 36-year-old was declared dead at the scene.

His 27-year-old walking companion was taken to Kingaroy Hospital as a precaution.

Police launched an investigation into the crash, which led them to a Mercedes at an address on Boonenne Ellesmere Road in Taabinga, a few minutes south of Kingaroy.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the home.

First Avenue, near Logan Road, was closed following the crash and people were asked to avoid the area.

Investigators are searching for the car and the driver involved in the incident.
