Australia’s south-eastern cities should brace for an unreasonable deluge of storms, hail and strong winds, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned.
An intense blast of warm conditions isset to break temperature records across the country, with the weather systems moving across the south-east expected to impact conditions.

Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury told Weekend Today some parts of central Victoria, Melbourne and NSW should expect “severe” thunderstorms.

“We are going to see severe thunderstorms likely through much of central inland Victoria, possibly reaching those northern suburbs of Melbourne,” Bradbury said.

“But it will also spill over into southern NSW, parts of the Riverina as well. Now in those severe thunderstorm areas, we could see widespread damaging winds, large hail… heavy rainfall is possible.”

Bradbury said the heavy wind conditions would have the biggest risk factor for areas most impacted by the weather system as it moves across the south-east.

“Winds of that strength with thunderstorms can bring down trees and powerlines, leading to dangerous driving conditions, possibly even power outages,” she said.

“So if you live anywhere in Victoria, but also anywhere in south-east South Australia and southern NSW, be aware of this storm risk today.”

The wild weather is set to continue into the week, with an extremely windy day expected on Tuesday.

“On Tuesday they’re likely to be much, much more widespread across the southeast states.”
