Police are searching for a man after a woman was sexually assaulted while running in a park north-west of Melbourne.

The woman was going underneath a bridge in Jacana Reserve, near Johnstone Street, about 11.30am on August 14 when she heard someone come up behind her.

She was thrown to the ground by a unknown man and sexually assaulted, police said.

“The woman was able to get away and ran to the car park, where two passers-by assisted and called police,” police said.

The woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries, including scratches and pain in her shoulders.

A major search — including police, a helicopter and the dog squad — was launched in an effort to find the man but he was unable to be found.

Police believe the man was wearing a dark jumper and pants at the time.
