After three decades, the beloved Sea World Monorail has reached the end of its journey.
The iconic Gold Coast attraction, which was the first of its kind to open in Australia in 1986, has officially closed its doors, after the completion of the Atlantis precinct.
Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the then-premier of Queensland, had the honour of boarding the inaugural ride on the monorail 38 years ago.
Since then, it has completed a staggering 330,000 circuits around the park and delighted 23 million guests.
However, time has taken its toll on the aging infrastructure, and the inability to procure appropriate parts has ultimately led to the difficult decision to cease operations.
“The support for the infrastructure that we had in place was no longer available worldwide, and hence we made the decision to close the monorail down,” Bikas Randhawa, from Village Roadshow Theme Parks, explained.
The removal of the monorail track will commence later this year, marking the end of an era for Sea World and its loyal patrons.
