Fever-Mercury game descends into chaos with pushing and shoving after hard screen

Shoves were exchanged between the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury on Friday night.

About halfway through the third quarter of Indiana’s 98-89 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell and Mercury’s Natasha Cloud clashed after a tough screen by NaLyssa Smith — and that’s when things got ugly.

Mitchell and Cloud appeared to collide near the 3-point line, and the former apparently wasn’t happy with the play.

After nearly falling to the floor, Mitchell turned around and pushed Cloud.

The pair would come face-to-face, nearly going to blows, before players from both teams jumped in to break it up.

Mitchell and Cloud would exchange words from across the court as their teammates held them back.

Both players were handed a technical foul.

Caitlin Clark and the Fever were in their first game since July 17 after a month-long break for the Paris Olympics.

Clark finished with a double-double, scoring 29 points with 10 rebounds.

Smith added 13 and nine, repsectively.
