The recent spring-like weather in southeastern states is set to end abruptly from today as fierce winds, rain and severe thunderstorms spread across the region.

The region has experienced warm and mild weather since Sunday, with Adelaide set to see a run of five days over 20 degrees between Sunday and today.

But the fine weather will end abruptly from late today, with the passage of a low-pressure system and associated front.

It will result in temperatures dropping to around 15 degrees tomorrow in Adelaide and Saturday in Melbourne.

The low will also bring potential rain and thunderstorms, which will begin in South Australia from this afternoon and spread towards the southeast into Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT tomorrow and Saturday.

Rainfall of 20mm to 40mm is forecast in the next three days across the southeastern mainland, while western Tasmania could be in for 40mm to 60mm.

Severe thunderstorms are possible in SA from this afternoon and NSW, the ACT and Victoria tomorrow.

They could bring damaging winds in these storms and small hail, forecasters say.

The wind, storms and rain are forecast to clear later on the weekend, before another strong cold front approaches Australia’s southeast mid-next week.

Meanwhile, a blast of late winter wet weather is set to impact Perth in coming days.

Damaging winds and heavy rain are possible with possible thunderstorms from late tomorrow into Saturday.

The sudden change in conditions will also bring a plunge in temperatures. Perth should only reach maximums of about 15 degrees, about 3 degrees below average for this time of year.
