Remains discovered in a Florida canal on Sunday are reportedly those of a mother and her child who vanished 50 years ago.

NBC6 South Florida reports that a 35-year-old woman and her daughter, 3, were reported missing in 1974 from their home at 13411 NW 2nd St. in Plantation. Her vehicle, a 1961 Chevrolet Impala. was also missing, police said at the time.

Despite extensive investigations over the years, the case went cold until 2023, when volunteer group Sunshine State Sonar partnered with Plantation police to assist in the search.

On Sunday, the team located a vehicle in a Plantation canal near the 10100 block of West Broward Boulevard. A subsequent dive search revealed it to be a 1960s Chevrolet Impala.

Inside the car, skeletal remains consistent with an adult and a small child were found, police confirmed.

“I could see something lying on the back seat. It looked like a purse or something like that. I couldn’t tell what it was, and I reached in, grabbed it and brought it up,” a volunteer diver told Local News 10.

“It was just above the vehicle, and we realized it was a kid’s toy. It was very emotional. It was almost like it was that little girl’s way of saying you found me.”

Investigators have not released the identities, pending dental records results. However, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Doris Wurst and her daughter, Caren Wurst, disappeared from Plantation in November 1974, in a 1961 Impala.
