The car then burst into flames.

The rest of the wreck remained on the road.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and the driver was taken to the Alfred Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A large section of the road remained closed this morning so damaged powerlines could be repaired.

A nearby resident told 9news the sound of the crash was alarming.

“It was one of the loudest things I’ve ever heard,” he said.

“Yeah it was pretty terrifying, especially at two in the morning.”

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

It comes as Victoria police confirmed today that 173 people have died on Victorian roads this year.
