Officers were called to the rural Northey Road in the town of Tolga, in the Atherton Tablelands south-west of Cairns, at 1pm today, following reports of a man armed with “a bladed object.”

Police said man approached an officer whilst armed and was shot in the abdomen.

He was given first aid and flown to Cairns Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“This matter is under investigation by Ethical Standards Command with the investigation subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission,” the Queensland Police Service said.
